Go Fish is one of the most popular children's card games, but it is also enjoyed by adults as a light, social game. The objective is to collect the most books — complete sets of four cards of the same rank. Players take turns asking opponents for specific card ranks. If the asked player has any, they must hand them over. If not, the asker must “Go Fish” by drawing from the pond. Go Fish teaches memory, observation, and deduction skills, making it an excellent first card game for children while remaining fun for all ages.
Go Fish is played with 2 to 6 players using a standard 52-card deck. For 2-3 players, deal 7 cards each. For 4-6 players, deal 5 cards each. Place the remaining cards face-down in the center as the pond (also called the fish pond, draw pile, or ocean). Players look at their own cards but keep them hidden from other players.
On your turn, choose one other player and ask them for a specific rank (e.g., “Do you have any Queens?”). You must already hold at least one card of the rank you are asking for — you cannot ask for a rank you do not have.
When you collect all four cards of the same rank (for example, all four Kings), immediately place them face-up in front of you as a completed book. Books are scored at the end of the game. There are 13 possible books in a standard deck (one for each rank from Ace through King). Books can be formed at any time — on your turn while asking, or between turns when receiving cards.
If you run out of cards during the game (because you made books or gave away all your cards), draw a new hand from the pond. In some rules, you draw one card; in others, you draw the standard deal amount (5 or 7). If the pond is empty when you run out of cards, you are out of the game and wait for it to end.
The game ends when all 13 books have been made or when the pond runs dry and no player can make a play. The player with the most books wins. In the event of a tie, the tied players share the victory (or play another round as a tiebreaker).
