Crazy Eights is a classic shedding card game where the goal is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards. Players take turns matching the top card of the discard pile by suit or rank, with eights serving as wild cards that can be played at any time. The game is easy to learn, fast to play, and works well with 2 to 7 players. Crazy Eights is the ancestor of the popular commercial game UNO and remains one of the most widely played casual card games in the world.
Crazy Eights is played with 2 to 7 players using a standard 52-card deck. For 2 players, deal 7 cards each. For 3 or more players, deal 5 cards each. Place the remaining cards face-down in the center as the stock pile. Turn the top card of the stock face-up next to it to start the discard pile. If the first card turned up is an 8, bury it in the stock and turn up the next card.
Play proceeds clockwise from the dealer. On each turn, a player must do one of the following:
Eights are the most powerful cards in the game. An 8 can be played on any card regardless of suit or rank, and the player who plays it declares the suit that the next player must follow. This makes eights extremely valuable — they can get you out of tough situations when you have no matching cards, and they let you control which suit is in play. Strategic players often save their eights for critical moments rather than playing them at the first opportunity.
If the stock pile is exhausted and a player cannot play, the discard pile (except the top card) is shuffled and turned face-down to form a new stock pile. Play continues. If both the stock and the discard pile are exhausted and a player cannot play, play passes to the next player. In the rare case that no one can play and no cards remain to draw, the round ends and each player scores the deadwood in their hand.
The first player to play all their cards wins the round. The winner scores points based on the cards remaining in all opponents' hands:
The game is typically played across multiple rounds until a player reaches a target score (commonly 200 points). The player with the highest score at the end wins.
