Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player tile-matching puzzle game that uses tiles from the traditional Chinese Mahjong set. Despite sharing the same tiles, Mahjong Solitaire is completely different from the four-player Chinese game of Mahjong. In Mahjong Solitaire, there are no turns, no opponents, and no drawing from a wall. Instead, all 144 tiles are arranged face-up in a layered formation, and your goal is to clear the entire layout by removing matching pairs of free tiles.
A standard Mahjong Solitaire game starts with 144 tiles arranged in a multi-layered formation. The most classic layout is the Turtle (also called the Pyramid), which stacks tiles in five overlapping layers that taper toward a peak. However, hundreds of alternative layouts exist, from simple flat grids to elaborate shapes like dragons, castles, and bridges.
Understanding which tiles are “free” is the most important concept in Mahjong Solitaire. A tile is free when it meets both of these conditions:
Only free tiles can be selected. If a tile you want to match is covered or squeezed in on both sides, you must first remove the tiles blocking it.
The core gameplay is simple: select two free tiles that match and they are removed from the layout. Matching rules are straightforward for most tiles, with two special exceptions:
A Mahjong Solitaire set contains 144 tiles in total, divided into the following categories:
| Category | Details | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Bamboo (Suit) | Ranks 1–9, four copies each | 36 |
| Characters (Suit) | Ranks 1–9, four copies each | 36 |
| Circles (Suit) | Ranks 1–9, four copies each | 36 |
| Winds | North, South, East, West × 4 | 16 |
| Dragons | Red, Green, White × 4 | 12 |
| Flowers | 4 unique tiles (any two match) | 4 |
| Seasons | 4 unique tiles (any two match) | 4 |
| Total | 144 |
A game of Mahjong Solitaire ends in one of two ways:
Not every game is winnable. The initial tile arrangement is randomized, and some deals create layouts that cannot be fully cleared regardless of the order in which matches are made. Skilled play involves looking ahead and making matches that open up the most useful tiles below.
While Mahjong Solitaire involves luck in the initial deal, good strategy dramatically improves your win rate:
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Players | 1 (single-player puzzle) |
| Total tiles | 144 |
| Layout | Multi-layered formation (Turtle, Pyramid, etc.) |
| Free tile | Not covered on top; at least one side open |
| Standard matching | Two identical free tiles removed together |
| Flowers & Seasons | Any two flowers match; any two seasons match |
| Win condition | Clear all tiles from the board |
| Loss condition | No matching free pairs remain |
