While standard 4-player partnership Euchre is the most popular version, the game has spawned numerous variants over its 200+ year history in America. Some adapt the game for different player counts, others add bidding mechanics, and some change the fundamental dynamics of trump selection. Here are the most widely played Euchre variants.
The default version played in the Midwest and Ontario. Four players in two partnerships, 24-card deck (9 through Ace), 5 cards per player, two-round trump selection, bower system, going alone option, play to 10 points. This is the version played on SuitedGames and the baseline from which all variants diverge.
In Cutthroat Euchre, three players each play for themselves. The maker plays alone against the other two, who temporarily form a defensive partnership for that hand. Scoring: the maker gets 1 point for 3 tricks, 3 points for all 5 (since they are always playing alone). If euchred, each defender gets 2 points. Cutthroat Euchre is more volatile than the partnership game since there is no partner to rely on.
A stripped-down version for two players. Each player is dealt 5 cards from the 24-card deck, with the same trump-selection rules. Since each player plays alone, going alone is not applicable. Some versions deal a dummy hand to a third “phantom” player to increase the unknowns. Two-player Euchre is faster and more tactical but lacks the partnership dynamics that make standard Euchre so engaging.
A popular variant in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Bid Euchre (also called Pepper) replaces the standard trump-selection mechanism with an auction. Players bid on how many tricks they think they can take (typically 3, 4, 5, or 6 with a partner, or alone). The highest bidder names trump and must meet their bid. Bid Euchre uses a 24-card or 28-card deck and adds a strategic layer — you must evaluate your hand before committing to a number. Overbidding is harshly penalized.
More of a rule variant than a separate game, Stick the Dealer is so widespread that it deserves mention. In standard Euchre, if all four players pass in both rounds, the hand is re-dealt. With Stick the Dealer, the dealer is forced to name a trump suit. This eliminates re-deals, speeds up the game, and adds a strategic dimension: players may pass more freely in early seats knowing the dealer will be stuck with a forced call. Stick the Dealer is the default rule on SuitedGames and in most competitive Euchre leagues.
Euchre traveled to England, Australia, and New Zealand with immigrants, and the British version has some notable differences. British Euchre typically uses a 25-card deck (adding the Joker as the highest trump, above both bowers) and plays to 11 points. Some British versions use a 32-card deck including 7s and 8s. The Joker adds a power card that significantly changes trump dynamics — the maker has access to an unbeatable card but must balance this against the rest of their hand.
A faster version of standard Euchre with a key addition: the Joker is included as the highest trump card (above the Right Bower). Railroad Euchre also uses the “call for best” rule: when going alone, the loner may ask their partner to pass them their best card (without seeing it). These additions increase the power of lone hands and make the game more aggressive.
A variant for 4, 5, or 6 players where everyone plays for themselves (no partnerships). Each player puts a chip into the pot before each hand. The maker must take 3 tricks to win; if successful, they take chips from the pot. If euchred, they add chips. Buck Euchre is popular as a gambling game and is especially common with 5 players, since the odd number prevents partnerships and the 24-card deck deals out evenly (4 cards each with 4 in the kitty).
